Here I sit on flight CO1421 somewhere over the southern states, my iPod churning out music from home. I have heard jazz in New Orleans, Cajun in upstate Louisiana and all sorts of stuff in Mexico.
Today I took public transport to Teotihuacan – the remains of a complex of pyramids and buildings which was once the greatest city in Central America.
Why do we all insist on travelling in cars? In New Orleans we had taken the shuttle (into town) and the tram (down the river front) and the boat (up the river, where else?) and the bus (to Walmart). But touring Louisiana in anything other than a hire car, would have been impossible.
Today mingled with the Mexicans. I didn’t hear a single English or American word until after 5pm. I spent the day feeling quite conspicuous with my blue eyes, camera and thick Lonely Planet book in hand.
